The Strong Schools Coalition is made up of engaged Douglas County parents and community members:
Laura Mutton, President
My husband and I have been residents of Douglas County since 1994 and have 2 children – an 11th grader at Mountain Vista High School and a 6th grader at Powell Middle School. I have served as a School Accountability Committee member for the last 6 years and have fulfilled the roles of Chairperson, District Accountability Committee Liaison and Parent Teacher Support Organization Liaison. Nine years ago when my oldest child started kindergarten, I volunteered to be Treasurer of Summit View’s founding Parent Teacher Support Organization (PTsO). I spent 7 years as an officer in Summit View’s PTsO, including the roles of President, Treasurer, Secretary and PTsO SAC Liaison. I continue to be actively involved with the PTsO and am currently the Chairperson of their Community Outreach committee. In 2011, I led a committee which raised over $45,000 to retain key staff members and programs at my child’s school. Both of my children attended preschool at Laura Ingalls Wilder Parent Participation Preschool in the Littleton Public School district, where I served as a board member of the school. I was a Cub Scout Leader for 5 years and am currently a Girl Scout Leader. In my professional life I am an independent software designer and programmer of accounting software. Strong schools are an essential piece of a successful community and secure, stable property values. I look forward to serving on the Strong Schools Coalition.
Mary Strain, Vice President
My husband and I have been residents of Parker for over 20 years. I am a former elementary school teacher and taught grades 1-5 in Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Florida, and Colorado. I had the joy, honor, and responsibility of teaching 3rd grade in Douglas County School District for many years. Since leaving teaching, I have continued my involvement in education by participating in my grandchildren’s school activities as well as being the community representative on my neighborhood school’s School Accountability Committee, (SAC). I am also the District Accountability Committee (DAC) liaison for that school. I believe strong schools require a commitment from the school staff, parents, students, and also the community. I look forward to working with the Strong Schools Coalition as we continue to inform.
